this is a test - song notes

xperiments

Ironically, this was the last song I wrote for the album. It was listening to XM Radio one night and I heard some Buff Love on the mic. I forgot how live the Disco 3 were! After I found an ill beat-box sample I decided that I wanted to set a tone for the album with unconventional song structure and arrangement. I think it worked.

chamber music

A tribute to the golden age of hip-hop. Ill samples, "two-niggas-in-the-back-seat-rasslin'" bass, and break beats. Ah, the classics!

original affairs (version)

This joint is actually a remix to a song I originally wrote for a friend of mine. I wanted to completely change the vibe from the original, which was a slow-tempo hip-hop track, to something more aggressive. Once I put the d-n'-b break to it, it took on a life of its own. The title was inspired by the Native American vocal sample used. ***SOCIOPOLITICAL SOAPBOX ALERT*** I was reminded that long after the Native Americans were run off their homeland by the invaders, the government created a Bureau of Indian Affairs to deal with the issues of education for "Indian" children, economic development, directing agricultural programs, and of course, land distribution. How insulting. Bureau on Indian Affairs? I guess Bureau to Continually Screw the Original Inhabitants Out Even More of Their Stuff was already taken. I'm off my soapbox now. Sorry.

candlelight club

It took me a while to get the arrangement the way I wanted it on this song. I knew I wanted an uptempo joint with strings/atmospherics as a base. I could not decide on the solo instrument, so I went back to the basics with the grand piano. I'm really satisfied with how this turned out. However, when I remix it, I will extend the coda to give it a more of a dance vibe.

fungk

I remember this being the second song I wrote for the album. I definitely was going for something not as aggressive as the previous songs. Acid jazz with an funk edge. I hope someone gets to hear this one in a cool lounge/club type setting.

life

This song was the first song I wrote when I decided to make an album. But it almost didn't make the cut as it was also the last song I added to the track list. That is, until Shane strongly suggested that the song in this place originally didn't flow. He was right. I was inspired by 80's electronic/techno (specifically Kraftwerk) when I was composing this one.

i'm not scared

My favorite song an the album. Dedicated to my father. Inspired by Foo Fighters.
